Travel Options for flights

Important Note about the Airport

The airport code is YYT. Please make sure you book your travel to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Do not book your travel to St. John, New Brunswick (airport code YSJ).  It is in another province, more than 1000 km away.

Being a rather small city, St. John’s does not have a lot of direct flights from major cities outside of Canada, so be prepared for at least one connection. Some flights are seasonal flights, so keep checking flight possibilities, e.g. on the website of St. John’s International Airport Authority (https://stjohnsairport.com).

Common connections are through Halifax (YHZ), Montréal (YUL) or Toronto (YYZ).There are several flights daily from these cities operated by Air Canada (Star Alliance) and Porter Airlines.St. John’s is known for rapidly changing weather conditions and unreliable forecasts, so keep in mind that weather-related delays are not uncommon.

St. John's

Summary: St. John’s is a city of about 200,000 people situated on the eastern edge of the island of Newfoundland. It lays claim to being the oldest city in North America and is located within a few kilometers of Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America. Downtown St. John’s extends out from the inland edge of St. John’s Harbour, a spectacular natural harbour. The downtown core is compact and is packed with shops, restaurants, bars and hotels. It is known for its active nightlife, especially in the summer months. During the conference, one of the major streets will be closed to vehicular traffic and serve as a pedestrian mall with opportunities for outdoor dining and libations. The city is generally very safe and getting around by foot is easily accomplished.

Labrdador, Canada

Public Transport:  metrobus.com is available, but it is not nearly as frequent or reliable as it isin larger cities. A taxi or Uber is usually a better option if a ride is needed.

Weather: Be advised that St. John’s is known for rapidly changing weather conditions and unreliable forecasts. Cool, rainy and windy conditions are not out of the question in July. And neither are hot and humid conditions! As the old saying goes, if you don’t like the weather, wait ten minutes.
